4th International Chess Tournament "Halkida 2000"

Organizers: The International Open Chess Tournament of Halkida is organized by the local Evoiki Chess Club and the Greek Chess Federation with the support of the Evia Prefecture and the Municipality of Halkida.
Playing Hall: Best Western Lucy Hotel on the seaside of Halkida.
System: 9-round Swiss, FIDE rated, 2h/40 + 1h for the rest of the game.
Tournament Director: Mr. Yamarellos - President of Evoiki Chess Club.
Prizes: 1st place: 1500 euro (500000 drachmas). Total: 5200 euro.
Past winners: GM Atalik (1996), GM Miladinovic (1997), IM Cela (1998).
Latest News (August 18, 2000): GM Arkadi Rotstein won convicingly this year's Halkida open with 7.5/9 points. In the final 9th round Rotstein drew against IM George Mastrokoukos of Greece and he secured a clear 1st place in the final standings. Rotstein kept leading in the whole of the tournament and his fair victory was awarded with a money prize of 1500 euro and a gain of 16 ELO points for the next FIDE rating list. The most important 9th round results: Rotstein - Mastrokoukos draw, A.Kofidis - Managadze 1-0 (clear 2nd place for the Greek IM), Makropoulou - Istratescu draw, Turov - Khamrakulov draw, Gelashvili - Skaperdas 1-0, etc. A total of 48 players from 11 countries participated. Among them were 5 GMs, 1 WGM, 3 IMs and 4 FMs. 26 players were FIDE rated.
