1st INTERNATIONAL OPEN CHESS TOURNAMENT of PORTO CARRAS

Porto Carras, Halkidiki GREECE, 11-15 April 1998

82 chessplayers participated in the 1998 Porto Carras open chess tournament, among them 5 GMs (Alexander Nenashev, Efstratios Grivas, Igor Miladinovic, Krum Georgiev, Ioannis Nikolaidis) and 34 players with a FIDE rating. The Georgian IM Tamas Gelashvili was the final winner of the event with 7.5 points in 9 games. Gelashvili also received the 1st money prize of 300,000 drachmas (about 1,000 USD).

The tournament was organized in the Sithonia Beach Hotel-Casino within the Porto Carras tourism complex in Northern Greece (about 100 km south of Thessaloniki city).
